Connecting Poetry + meaning
I think I am the second person to post but here is what i wrote in class today(3/31/06)... Donald writes bodily pleasure. In the poem VITAL the author demonstrates, metaphorically, how the body is pleasured or soothed by the subject in the poem. Which is actually poetry. it almost suggests that the writer's needs and indulgences are met at the same time. the writer is pleasured so much so that he/she seems addicted to this form of pleasure. Without it discomfert and disatisfaction arises in them. The writer enjoys this particular pleasure until he/she is fully satified...

I think im the first person to post and I have no idea how to post with out some one already posting Prof. CHurch hasn't even asked us the official question but here is my response from class. "Words are to poems as a stone is to the stone carving sculptor" To Look At Anything: "... You must take the time and touch the very place they issue from." Both of these phrases show that words and perception are the first sensations we have when viewind a poem or a piece of art. However, the truth and meaning in that piece of work is much deeper than it first appears.
Poetry sets mood and feeling. Hall states, "...poetry adds the secret (unsayable) room of feeling and tone to the sayable story." (6)
Poetry expresses ways in which humans may feel. Usually ways in which other people can relate to.
Poetry also tells a story. It gives descriptive picture for the reader. For example, in "A Little Night Poem" gives the reader a vivid picture of the setting in his story:
...this is the time he has, nightly, when preacticalities need not matter and the news can wait-...". The author here sets a picture in the readers mind of a childs father playing music close to his childrens bedtime. Without this setting the reader could not relate to the poem.
This poem can relate to a musician or a father who is dedicated to his childrens needs.
Orionsbelt3 makes a good point when he/she states, "words and perception are the first sensations we have." As you continue reading the poem, the words in the poem continues to set perceptions of how the author views his or her father before bedtime.
